I’ve known of so many women who have resigned themselves to the belief that bearing children ultimately leads to the ruin of a woman’s body. But are physical problems like the perpetual mommy tummy (diastasis recti), incontinence (leaking urine while sneezing, jumping, coughing, etc.), or uterine prolapse (pelvic muscles and tissue so weak that they allow the uterus to literally fall down and out) really inevitable?
I say no. I’m learning that as mothers, we do not need to accept a permanently broken body, and I’m committed to not letting it happen to me to be the best of my ability. I have a plan in place, too, and it involves my favorite online fitness program that’s teaching me so much.

I Will Not Punish My Body Back Into Shape
After five babies, my body is a completely different shape than it was before I became a mother. I realize that this is totally normal and healthy. I am not about to try to look like I did pre-baby days. It’s unrealistic and will only set me up for disappointment.
I get wanting to see fast weight-loss and get back into my pre-pregnancy clothes within a few months. I sometimes really struggle with not fitting into my clothes as fast as I’d like.
But one thing I’ve learned from my time as a Fit2B member is that I need to honor and respect what my body has done for me and where my current limits are. I don’t need to punish my body or beat it back into shape. In fact, if I try that, I’ll only do more harm.
I Will Gently Heal My Core
My core muscles have gone through tremendous changes over the past ten years. Five full-term pregnancies and deliveries means that my muscles have been stretched and challenged in some of the most amazing ways possible.
Before Fit2B, I never knew that those core muscles needed to heal after birth. I had never heard of diastasis recti or tummy-safe exercises. I did sit-ups, crunches, and plank-type exercises to try to get my tummy flat again, but it never worked. It probably caused more strain.
Now I know that I need to first work on healing the diastasis recti caused from my pregnancies. The best way to do that is through special exercises, like the “tummy-safe” ones promoted by Fit2B.
This is my first time really trying to heal my core after five pregnancies, so I know it will take time. But it will be worth it! I don’t want to end up with problems like those listed above when I know now that they can be prevented.
I Will Slowly Restore Strength to My Muscles
While working on closing the diastasis I have, I’m also gently restoring strength, flexibility, and endurance to the muscles that have been a tad, um, neglected these past ten years. Though I used to be very athletic, ten years of motherhood has removed that far from me!
I know that I can’t go from where I am now to where I’d love to be in a few months. This is going to take time, but I’m actually motivated to exercise again. It excites me to know that I don’t have to dread what my body will be like at 50 because I’ve been blessed with babies. I don’t have to let motherhood ruin my body!
Don’t think for a minute that I’m super consistent with my exercising. I’m not, though I wish I was. I let too much get in the way of it, to be perfectly honest. But because of what I’ve learned from Fit2B videos, I am much more aware of how I move, sit, and stand. Even when I don’t do the actual workouts, I try to sneak small exercises through the day.
