Locker room banter is shrugged off as being one of the guys. Boys will be boys, right? Let’s sit down and talk, son, because there are some things you need to know.
Sit down, son. We need to talk.
You need to know that rich man’s words sickened me when I heard them. Not just because they were vulgar, but because they spoke of violence and assault and abuse.
Vulgarity? Sure, that’s offensive. But boasting of assault; that’s sickening.
But then the social commentary began and the filth he spewed out with such heartless arrogance was justified.
Justified. Just locker room banter, they said. Guys say that and worse all the time. Just get over it. Boys will be boys.
At first that made me angry, son. But I’ve thought about it, and the more I’ve thought, the more I’ve realized something.
They’re right. Boys will be boys.
My son, it won’t be long before you enter your teenage years and everything starts to radically change. And as much as I’d love to walk you through it all and shield you from every sexually-charged conversation and situation, I can’t.
Before I know it, you will be grown, no longer my little child.
You have to understand that boys will be boys.
If you are surrounded by the guys and they appraise the worth of a girl by the shape of her figure or the look of her face, just remember. Boys will be boys.
If a magazine or image is flashed before your eyes, shooting a thrill through your body but an arrow through your soul, just remember. Boys will be boys.
If the guys want to brag about pushing limits and passing boundaries and coercing the word no into an unwilling yes, just remember. Boys will be boys.
If the intimacy reserved for husband and wife becomes a continual conquest to be pursued with woman after woman by any of your friends, just remember. Boys will be boys.
If a beautiful woman walks by and the looks or the heckles or the whispered vows of grandiose domination surge, just remember. Boys will be boys.
If the jeering and the jesting builds with the guys and sexuality becomes the punchline or a virgin body the joke, just remember. Boys will be boys.
If they all want to look at a woman and revel in her solely as a means to their own desired end, just remember. Boys will be boys.
Yes, son. In the locker room, at the party, and even on the job. Boys will be boys.
Now you go and be a man.
